The November 2021 update includes a dedicated field for genre. We created this field after hearing from many clients that they need to categorize events more specifically than event type allows.
Some clients tracked genre using another solution, such as using the business classification field, or creating event types which included the genre (such as Concert - Country, Concert - Rock, and so on). Now that there is a dedicated genre field, you'll need to decide how to proceed going forward. You could:
- Continue using your current way of tracking genre.
- Transition to using the new genre field on future events (maybe from 2022 forward), but do not update older events using the old system.
- In order to report on the older events, you will not be able to remove the old event types or business classifications from the list in Sys Admin. You can prepend z_ to drop them to the bottom of the list.
- Update all events to use the new genre field.
- This is our recommendation, because it allows you to clean up the event type and business classification lists in Sys Admin, allows filtering by genre on the event list and calendars regardless of event date range, and simplifies reporting going forward.
If you are unsure of how to proceed, please contact us.
To transition to the new genre field:
- Create your genre options in the new section of System Admin.
- Create a new primary event type or business classification. For example, if you were previously using event types named Concert - Pop, Concert - R&B and so on, you will create a new event type Concert. Do not remove the old options.
- If you are transitioning to the new field on future events:
- Prepend z_ or such on the old types so they drop to the bottom of the list and are not used.
- Decide on a date for the changeover (such as January 1, 2022).
- Create an event list view which includes all events from that date forward, filtered by the old types. We recommend saving this view.
- Working from this list, update any future events to the new event type/business classification and genre.
- Once all events have been updated, you can remove the saved view.
- Contact us to update any reports or dashboards which use genre.
- If you are transitioning all events:
- Prepend z_ or such on the old types so they drop to the bottom of the list and are not used.
- Create an event list view which includes all events, filtered by the old types. We recommend saving this view.
- Working from this list, update events to the new event type/business classification and genre.
- Once all events have been updated, you can remove the old types as well as the saved view.
